Memory is a liquid thing
That offers some small comforts
I've held your face for so long
So close to the surface
But memory is a treacherous thing
Takes all that is most precious
Claims you to vagueness
Claims you forgotten
We were there that day
Time stood still
The adults were whispering
We heard the words:
"The fourth disease"
You disappeared into your invalid's bed
Never to come out to play again

I washed my hands of this town
Streetlights died as I passed below
A scorched path on my way out
It seemed right somehow
I took my home apart
Put the pieces in the car
Carried them away in the backseat of the car
X-ed out of the photographs
I rolled the windows down
Threw them out on the road back there
On the highway miles ago
I keep them close to me
The things you said to me
The things you didn't really mean
And I can't forget
I washed my hands of this town
And you told everyone you were afraid
No more
And when I think of your happiness I am broken.
I washed my hands of this
The streetlights died as I passed below
X-ed out of the photographs
It seemed right somehow
I washed my hands of this
I took my home apart
X-ed out of the photographs
I washed my hands of this.
